Social democracy and education have enjoyed a long-standing relationship. In the early days of the labour movement, teachers played a prominent role, not only by paving the road to emancipation for their pupils, but also by influencing the programmes and culture of the social democratic parties in Europe.
Now, a century later, the quality of education and its inequalities are again major concerns for social democrats. Their mission seems clear: the stimulation of better education and more equal opportunities in education must form the heart of European social democracy´s programme. Former Labour leader Tony Blair formulated this mission in a simple slogan: ´Education, education, education´. Realising this mission will be far from simple. Raising the level of educational performance is a complex matter. Resolving the persistant inequalities in education will be just as difficult. It is this mission, and the problems to be overcome on the journey, that the book is about.
